Many of us think about conservation haphazardly. There are people who recycle religiously, others make sure their homes are energy efficient, some go one step further by installing solar panels or recycling rainwater, but generally, we're not fanatical about it. There is one very simple way of contributing to the future health of our planet that often escapes people's notice and that is green holidays.
You might have heard of eco-tourism; holidays in places where there is a concerted effort to minimise the impact on the environment with an emphasis on conservation and sustainability. In the UK, green holidays come as a simpler package. There aren't the issues of lost habitats through deforestation or the erosion of natural coral reefs but there is the fabulous British countryside that many of us fail to fully appreciate.
Getting out in the rolling hills of England, the valleys and mountains of Wales and the impressive Scottish Highlands on a walking or cycling holiday is a true joy. Forget the trappings of the fancy hotels for once and discover the simple joys of UK green holidays which include fabulous views, fresh air, an interesting history and the chance to get local.
It doesn't have to be mountains, the UK's National Parks or the National Trust walking trails are just as inviting. You can walk or cycle between some of the nation's prettiest villages, stay in friendly hostels or welcoming Bed and Breakfasts or dinky little hotels.
A walking or cycling holiday is the ideal opportunity to see the real Britain, in close up.
